When to bring in the new

Recently I had a brief discussion with a friend on how inspired you feel if you start something new. I had mentioned that I had been feeling pretty uninspired for a while and that once I picked up the guitar everything else suddenly became more interesting and colourful again, even work. She argued the case for learning to be grateful what you have and not always start something new. Now of course everybody needs to figure out on a case by case basis how they want to address this issue. Skipping every week from hobby to hobby is tiring but it's equally tiring to get up for weeks without a clear activity, thing or person you're looking forward to. Being grateful is always a good idea but the question is what happens if that becomes an excuse?

Can't we all learn to become more grateful, to cultivate it everyday? Sure and it's worthwhile. But sometimes all the gratitude in the world can't conceal the fact that you are yearning for something new. After all the word inspire derives from breathing in. How long would you last if you told yourself "I should be grateful for the amount of oxygen I have, it's clean, my lungs are healthy, what else is there to want?". For our body it would be lethal but I suspect it's the same with the soul, it just takes longer. If like me you are aware of your blessings but somehow seem to still lack energy it's probably time for some fresh air for the soul. The beautiful things about our being is that it's not picky. Your lungs won't accept anything but oxygen but you're being is happy as long as there's at least something inspiring around. It can be another person, a new hobby, work project, a city, anything really. And sometimes if you are lucky the same thing can be inspiring for years and there's no need for much new input.

It's really not a question of whether you are grateful OR long for something new. Be grateful by all means but don't feel bad about needing some new inspiration from time to time. Nobody wins if you deny yourself of that.
